According to Greek mythology, Scorpio is associated with Orion, son of Poseidon (God of the Sea) and Gaia (Goddess of the Earth). Orion was known as a fearsome hunter of different marine and terrestrial species. In one of his adventures, he came to the Island of Kios, where he fell madly in love with Merope, daughter of King Oenopion. Orion asked Oenopion for the hand of his daughter; however, the king told him that the only way for him to grant his daughter would be by achieving a mandate: get rid of all the animals that harmed the island's crops. Orion readily agreed to the mission and got rid of all the beings that were damaging the crops. However, returning for the hand of his beloved, he found to his surprise that King Oenopion and his daughter had disappeared. Orion went into a trance of despair because of the king's deception and began to destroy everything that he found in his path on the island: animals, vegetation, mortals. Everything that was in his way was destroyed by Orion. Gea, mother of Orion, was upset by the immature reaction of her son so she sent a small animal to calm her anger: a scorpion. Orion saw the animal and it seemed so harmless to him that he stepped on it. However, the scorpion poisoned him with its sting and eventually they both died. The god Zeus, due to Orion's feat in life, placed him in the sky as a constellation. Likewise, he did it with the little scorpion by naming it the Constellation of Scorpio.
